He loaded the bike with around fifty pounds of luggage, including a sleeping bag, bottled water, a bike pump, and one extra set of clothes that he could wear to dinner in place of his biking gear. Parish didn’t bring a tent or extra food, and he slept in a hotel and ate dinner in a restaurant almost every night. The sleeping bag was just for emergencies. His goal was to bicycle across America, not to sleep on the hard rocky ground of America. Despite those best laid plans, Parish did end up spending four nights in the great outdoors on the course of his trip.
