first grade teacher,” announced her roommate. There was not a sound in the room as this sank in. • “You are! You are! You are Miss Smoot. But I have not seen you since about the time I was in third grade. How could you remember me from all the students you taught?” exclaimed Mrs Lizzy Colton Black.
“I know my students,” Annie replied quietly.
I thought, “Wow, this is fantastic. An 84-year-old with such fabulous memory and recall, eyesight, sense of timing, and command.” I still had my nurse assessment to perform to get the patient admitted, but this one time I would delay.
The monitor was on. Annie had an IV inserted, and her vital signs were taken before she left the ER and were stable. Annie was obviously mentally intact. This was a moment for these two women, and I didn’t disturb it.
The two younger children went to Annie’s bedside, and one grabbed Annie’s hand.
“I’m a first grader now. Was grandmother really in the first grade?” she asked.
The second grandchild chimed in, “I’m in kindergarten, will you be my teacher next year?”
This changed my mind. I thought that this is a time not only for these two women, but also for the next generation, too; Annie is captivating.
