Parish began his long ride on a beach off San Diego on February 24, 2006. He had flown there from Virginia, and shipped his bike ahead of him. Parish’s bike is a recumbent model, meaning that the rider operates the bike from a reclined seated position. Parish chose the recumbent style because it eased strain on his arthritic neck and elbows, and also because he was able to get the bike in exchange for a load of hay in Amissville. Throughout his trip, Parish’s odd looking bike brought him extra attention.
