National Nurse’s Week will come to a close on May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday. In honor of nurses everywhere, Flint Hill’s Jennifer Matthews decided to share a little of the life of a nurse with Rappahannock County. She already shares her years of experience with nursing students every day at Shenandoah University, and she also serves on the Rappahannock County Board of Zoning Appeals.
The events below happened to Nurse Matthews around 10 years ago in a local hospital. Some names have been changed to preserve anonymity.
A nursing story
On the day she got her new roommate, Elizabeth Black was visited by her two daughters and three young grandchildren.
An 80-something lady on a gurney from the ER. was being admitted. As I steered the gurney into the room, Mrs. Black looked at her incoming roommate, anticipating an introduction. I started to introduce the ladies but was interrupted by the newcomer.
“You don’t have to introduce me to her -1 know her already, and most things about her,” she said.
Mrs. Black turned toward the voice, clearly not recognizing the new patient. The incoming patient’s blue eyes locked dead center on Mrs. Black’s eyes, and she said “Lizzy Colton is your name.”
