he needed it, and Parish even met a man who was crossing America just like himself, only this guy was doing it on a unicycle.
“He eventually just gave up,” remembered Parish.
For the first month of his trip, Parish rode alone.
“I wasn’t bored. I had plenty of time to think about everything,” he said.
In Austin, Texas, Parish was joined on the trip by his childhood best friend, Mike Morency of Middleburg. The trip was something they’d talked about for a long time.

Even with planning and preparation, on a thousand plus mile bike trip, things go wrong. Parish rode against headwinds as strong as 55 mph, capable of blowing him to a complete stop. He suffered six flat tires on his trip, five of them on his rear wheel, which bore all the weight of his baggage.
