The physician arrived and went to Annie. He sat on her bed and they locked gazes; and there was only the rhythmic sound of the ventilator pushing oxygen matched by the rise and fall of Annie’s chest in response.

He asked Annie her age, and she showed him eight fingers, and then six fingers. He asked if she recognized him, and she pointed to his name on her identification tag.

He asked her if she was alone, and Annie shook her head, “No”.

“Annie, who is with you?” he asked.

She stroked Kerry’s hand, she gestured toward me, and she turned her head as if to hear and to see above her - she lifted her hand and swept it in an arc around the room.

He said “Are your parents with you?”and she nodded yes.

“Are the angels here also?” he asked, and she nodded again and gazed upward with wonder.

The physician took her hand in both of his and leaned forward putting his face very close to hers. He told her that he could save her by putting her on a ventilator or pull the breathing tube from her mouth and allow her to go to be with her family in heaven.

Annie shook her head at the mention of the ventilator and nodded at the second option, gratitude in her eyes.

“Annie, if I do this, you have to understand what will happen. It will take a few hours for your body to stop breathing and for you to die; these may be hours of misery for you. We will give you morphine but it may not cover the entire struggle. If I take you off this machine, you may want to go back on it later” the doctor said.

Annie shook her head, telling him “No.” Kerry agreed
