in many applications, leather was once a very important material in many aspects of life. And before mass transportation and industrialization altered production and distribution methods, local tanneries existed to meet the product demand. These small leather-processing factories, sometimes called tan yards, were nearly as ubiquitous as small local mills. Indeed, even before specialized tanneries flourished, one of the important products on selfsufficient farms was leather. The ‘raw’ hides even came from local cattle.
