and friend to many of the students - particularly the girls on the soccer team, who I know will miss her dearly, as will I.
Lastly, I need to thank the students. They are extraordinary people, who trusted me with their dreams. I wish everyone in the community could know them - know of their intelligence, their persistence in the face of bad odds and high hurdles, their work ethic (sometimes working 20-70 hours a week outside of school), their challenges (for example: learning English, undergoing a liver transplant, losing a mother, coping with disease and disability or living 2,000 miles from home), and the grace and courage with which they handled it all. You should see the love and gratitude they have for their families and churches and the excitement in their eyes when they gain acceptance to a college, win a scholarship or carry around an application essay for their teachers and friends to read. You should see the fear they feel when they think of leaving home. They are pioneers with tremendous courage and it has been nothing but a gift to me to have them and this work in my life.
