in over 75 percent of schools nationwide, is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that works with teachers and administrators from kindergarten through 12th grade. Capt. Jeff Brown of the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office is the officer assigned to the program in our public schools.
Back at the school, fun things to see and investigate were the order of the day. Snow cones, popcorn, and cotton candy were everywhere. Huge brightly painted machinery, including monster snoW blowers from VDOT that can tackle 8-foot snow banks, were parked around the school for kids to admire. Shiny new fire engines from local fire companies also were popular exhibits that impressed the children as well as their parents. There was even an antique “Wayne” automobile from the 20s for everyone to admire—a proud family heirloom being restored by Capt. Brown.
Another interactive program at D.A.R.E. Day was the presence of “Therapy Dogs” accompanied by their trainers, offering opportunities to parents and children alike to “shake hands” and pet the friendly dogs trained to visit schools, hospitals, and nursing homes.
