preparing for her summer vacation when she became extremely ill. Her skin had jaundiced and she suffered from excruciating pain. She was quickly diagnosed and soon found herself with a rapidly failing liver. With the death of a 16-yearold boy, Ashleigh was given the organ that gave her a second chance at life. She received her life-saving organ on September 5, 2004 and had many months of recovery to come. Successful liver transplantation in a child is often a hard-won victory, a victory that Ashleigh has never taken for granted. Ashleigh quickly returned to school, made up all of her assignments, and turned her life crisis into a mission to help others. Ashleigh’s experience inspired her to pursue becoming a certified nursing assistant prior to her high school graduation. Ashleigh plans to continue her nursing career at Lord Fairfax Community College in the fall. Ashleigh aspires to assist transplant survivors like her. Ashleigh’s story represents the best of the human spirit: She found that there is a silver lining or another side to every bad or unpleasant thing. Instead of looking at the bad, this 16-yearold discovered the meaning of life.
