One could argue that the county’s plan for an additional tax for the new building is simply prudent planning for future needs. But there is other planning going on as well, also suggesting more and bigger government. Last month, the county supervisors approved spending $400,000 to purchase four acres at the Avon Hall site which lies adjacent to the county court house ground—also for future office expansion needs. Plans for the use of this land are undefined.
Do we really need a new county government center out by the bank PLUS new county offices at Avon Hall, in addition to the recently remodeled and expanded offices on the court house grounds? This looks like a lot of government expansion for a small county whose population is not growing. Beyond the tax and cost implications, it points toward a day when Rappahannock County government won’t be on the small, convenient and friendly scale that it is today. And it raises issues for the Town of Washington, because moving government offices out to the bank site robs the town of reasons for “real people” (as opposed to upscale tourists) to visit.
