In its continuing presentation of emerging regional, national and international artists, Robert Ballard is proud to present new paintings by Virginia artist Nancy Bass, November 18 - December 10.
An opening reception for the artist will take place Saturday, November 18, from 4-7 p.m. at the Ballard Gallery on Main Street in Historic Washington, Virginia. Refreshments will be served and the public is invited.
In this exhibition entitled “Still Grazing,” the artist explores her passion for color and her love of animals. These small and large paintings are truly stunning in their stillness, beauty, focus and use of light. The viewer will discover a peacefulness and expressiveness that encompass the artists’ world:
Painting cows on her own farm and the landscape they inhabit has become Bass’ continuing interest and passion. The drama of the social dynamics of the herd are sometimes heightened with strong diagonals within the paintings. Other paintings are contemplative and explore the unity of the cows within the gentle beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The cows in several landscapes stare out of the canvas inquisitively and engage the viewer in an emotional relationship with the natural world.
Bass says about her work: “For over twenty years, I have been painting the rural land that surrounds my home, and I continue to find inspiration in the open pastures and rolling skyline of the Blue Ridge Mountains. My passion for color and love of animals has led to oil paintings that combine depictions of my cows with the gentle beauty of the surrounding farmland.
