Leslie Byrne, no stranger to state politics, was appointed last week to serve on Sen.elect Jim Webb’s transition team as he prepares to assume office.
Most recently, Byrne, of Falls Church, was a senior adviser for Webb’s successful bid for the U.S. Senate, a victory that ultimately put the congressional body under Democratic control.
But Byrne has spent the last two decades fighting her own political battles. She has served in the state Senate and House of Delegates, was the first woman to represent Virginia in Congress and ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in 2005.
Byrne announced her endorsement for Webb in March and, with her husband, Larry, worked on the candidate’s hard-won campaign.
