Most of Lane’s properties in Rappahannock were purchased in the 1960s by Wiliam Lane II, who headed Lane Industries until his death in 1978. According to the company’s Web site, Eldon Farms was pieced together from several smaller farms and is one of the largest contiguous land holdings in Virginia.
Keating said Lane’s primary reason for buying the land was that he enjoyed the area.
“It was just a beautiful piece of land he and his wife discovered,” Keating said. “They loved the agricultural aspect of it.”
Keating said Lane also purchased land in Culpeper and Madison counties, but those parcels were sold nearly 20 years ago. Lane’s only landiholdings in Virginia are now confined to Rappahannock.
