Dr. Ysaye M. Barnwell, leader of the internationally renown African American women’s a capella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock, will lead a Community Thanksgiving Sing of traditional spirituals and songs of celebration on the Friday after Thanksgiving, November 24, at the Schoolhouse in Sperryville, Virginia at 8 p.m.

Barnwell is a vocalist with a range of over three octaves and appears on more than twenty-five recordings with Sweet Honey as well as other artists. She has composed and arranged music on more than 14 recordings and for numerous and varied projects ranging from Sesame Street to the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange. She’s written music for numerous choirs - all outgrowths of her combined understanding of creative arts as inextricably bound to society. For over 20 years, she has conducted her workshop Building a Vocal Community that has utilized African and African American history, values, cultural and vocal traditions to work with singers and non-singers alike.

She believes that one of the most powerful ways to experience community is through song. “All songs are stories,* Ysaye says. “They teach us, heal us and inspire us to be in genuine community together. Songs put us in touch with our ancestors, give us roots and strength.”

Dr. Barnwell has taught with Ki Theatre artists Julie Portman and Paul Reisler at songwriting retreats and workshops throughout North America. “I remember coming out here to this beautiful Blue Ridge area several days after 9/11. I stood on the stage here in Washington, VA, and together we lifted our voices in song. We gave each other hope. Now is a time to give thanks. Community is " surely one of the most important gifts we have today.”
