Griffiths’ company, the 276th engineer battalion was called to serve in Iraq, his first deployment since he joined in 1986. “Iraq is very real,” he said adding, “there is no way to sugar coat things.” He recalls an incident in December 2004, when a suicide bomber struck his company’s mess hall killing two members of his battalion. “I know what the inside of a persons head looks like now,” he said bluntly, “Believe me, it was not a fun experience.”
