Give them
a boost
There’s a large graphic on the front page this week. It won’t be there every week but it will be on the inside with some regularity as the Rappahannock County School Sports Association launches on a large scale fund raiser. It’s a big ticket item to put bleachers and lights up at the school’s field but the booster community is hoping that the community at large will support their efforts. The push is now so that in the spring the field will be brighter and folks will have a place to sit. Scheduling will be enhanced if Rappahannock County High School can offer visiting teams playing time that can go into the evening hours. While some of the community is not into sports, there are many who are. They might have kids playing or their kids have friends who play. Sports is a big part of education. Fortunately there are no SOL tests associated with it but testing certainly goes on. The physical aspect is only a part of the stamina that is required. The mental and emotional strength is probably more challenging. There’s always going to be a coach that you don’t agree with or parents that are unruly or players that have differing abilities and attitudes. But, at its core, sports provide an arena where students, teachers, coaches, parents and the greater community can celebrate performance, cheer victories and cheer up each other when there is a loss. The lessons are invaluable as are the memories.
