The hottest issue at Tuesday evening’s Rappahannock County School Board meeting ended up being an item that was not even on the agenda.
Four people stood up during the public comment portion of the meeting to plead for changes to the school’s football program.
Doug Butler and Joe and Kathryn Reinboldt, all of whom are parents of players on the school’s football team, each stood up to request that the board pull out of the Bull Run District in favor of scheduling games independently against similar-sized schools. The varsity football team has a 1-19 record during the past two seasons, and the schedule for the next two years is in the works.
Joe Reinboldt said the other schools in the district are much larger than Rappahannock County High School, and the county simply does not have enough students to compete with schools that have larger student bodies.
“We have no business playing these teams,” Joe Reinboldt said. “We’re not going to compete in this district. Leifs play some teams we can compete with.”
