Family fame was shared with a group of area students, as Nobel Prize winner Dr. Craig Mello presented a lecture about his scientific achievement at the Rappahannock High School auditorium last Wednesday
Craig Mello is the brother of Rappahannock County High School Principal Roger Mello. The Mello family recently returned from the Nobel Prize awards ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden.
Dr. Craig Mello and his colleague, Dr. Andrew Z. Fire o f Standford were awarded the 2006 Nobel Prize in Medicine for their 1998 discovery in the field of RNA interference (RNAi.) They discovered ways to naturally turn off or “silence” genes that may be responsible for causing a wide range of sicknesses.
