On March 10, The Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection’s Biodiversity Task Force will sponsor “The Real Dirt on Soil and Microbes,” a presentation by Thornton and Harman. Thornton, who consults on soil fertility, farm management, and nutrient management planning, will explain the chemical and physical properties of soils—what constitutes a good soilfertility balance for optimum growth, the importance of nutrients as they are used in plant growth, the importance of organic matter in the soil, differences in soil amendments, and properties of various soil types. Harman will discuss the important role of microbes and other inhabitants of the soil food web.
