WILLIAMSBURG — The Rappahannock County High School Scholastic Bowl team made a statement Saturday afternoon.
It hopes that its first trip to the Group A state tournament is not its last.
"Ib make it to the state tournament, we must have done something right,” Rappahannock County sophomore cocaptain A.J. Collins said. “We would have preferred to finish first or second, but well be back.”
The Panthers finished fourth in the state tournament at The College of William & Mary, bowing out to Region A runner up Mathews, 290-85, in the consolation semifinals.
“We’re the first team to get there (to states), and to do so well,” Rappahannock senior Josh Makela added, “it felt really good.”
The tournament is a double-elimination competition. In each match, there are two rounds of 15, tossup questions and one round of direct questions. The questions focus on such topics as history and social studies, English and literature, various branches of science, mathematical computations and pop culture.
Still, Rappahannock County can consider its first state trip a success. After dropping the opening match to Region C champion Radford, 205-140, the Panthers rallied to stop Region D champion Honaker, 270-85, and Region A champion West Point, 180-145.
“We’ve come an awful long way this year,” Rappahannock County head coach David Naser said, “and we’re not finished yet.”
