There are 87 bridges in Rappahannock County, over 13.000 in Virginia, and over 590.000 bridges in the United States. Who knew?
At least once every two years, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) inspects about 10,000 of Virginia’s bridges that are listed on the National Bridge Inventory, reporting the results to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
The National Bridge Inventory came into being because of the Silver Bridge Collapse in December 1967. Cars and trucks overloading a corrosion-weakened bridge built in 1928 tumbled into the icy waters of the Ohio River between West Virginia and Ohio. A total of 46 lives were lost. Congressional hearings were held and National Bridge Inspection Standards were issued in April 1971.
