The Washington Town Planning Commission has reached a milestone in its ongoing efforts to formulate a policy that will guide future adjustments to the town’s boundaries.
On Monday, the commission recommended the policy to the Town Council, which will decide whether the guidelines are fit for an amendment to Washington’s comprehensive plan.
The policy-making process was stimulated by a petition from residents of the Piedmont neighborhood, which is immediately west of the town at Piedmont and Oden avenues.
Piedmont residents started the petition in June as an effort to be included in the town’s planned wastewater treatment system. They have been told by town officials that they do not need to join the town to be added to the wastewater system, but the petitioners have said they also want to be able to vote in town elections and run for town offices.
