Growth has come more quickly than expected for Dr. John F. McCue’s medical practice. And now the family physician is trying to keep up with a burgeoning patient list his Mountainside Medicine by hiring more employees, extending his business hours and expanding his building’s parking area.
But before McCue can do any of that, he needs approval to rezone his property from agricultural to general commercial.
The doctor brought the rezoning application before the Rappahannock County Planning Commission on Feb. 21, and the commission voted unanimously to recommend that the County Board of Supervisors approve the zoning change. . McCue’s practice has grown from serving 500 patients to 5,000 patients since it opened in 2001.
“We didn’t expect to grow this fast,” he told the commission.
McCue said he needs to hire more workers to accommodate his growing clientele and wants to expand and move the parking area to the rear of the building. He said he has no plans to make any changes to the building itself or to build any new structures on the property.
The 2.15-acre lot is located in Rappahannock’s General Commercial Overlay District near Rappahannock County Elementary School on the north side of U.S. 211. The commercial area is designated in the county’s comprehensive plan.
One citizen stood up to oppose the permit application.
Mike Brown Sr., who owns land adjacent to Mountainside, said the property was originally zoned for a single-family dwelling and McCue was allowed to operate a professional office there under a specialuse permit granted to the previous owner. Brown accused the
