Thousands of nematodes live in a square foot of soil. Many are beneficial to humans, including Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita, which controls overpopulation of slugs by penetrating and releasing damaging bacteria into them. These bacteria-infected nematodes are now sold commercially for this purpose. Nematodes are also used to control caterpillars and grubs.
