The Commonwealth’s Attorney for Prince William County will likely serve as special prosecutor in the Virginia State Police investigation of Culpeper County Sheriff Lee Hart.
Speaking on Monday, Paul B. Ebert confirmed that he had recently received notice of the appointment through the mail. He hinted at an end to the investigation within weeks.
This wouldn’t be the first time that Ebert, a 38-year veteran attorney will be in the spotlight. Ebert gained national notoriety in 2003 when he successfully prosecuted John Allen Muhammad, one of the two snipers charged with a series of murders along Interstate 95. Muhammad later received a death sentence.
Ebert also presided over the recent conviction of murderer Donald A. Brew.
The allegations were originally filed to the State Police by Scott Jenkins, shortly before resigning from the Culpeper County Sheriff’s department in June 2004.
