Boardwine said the farm school is an ideal environment for students in their adolescent years. The format helps teenagers learn to make judgments and develop real skills for the real world.
“It’s a really important time to capture them and connect them to the earth,” she said. “These skills have applications for the rest of their lives”
Teacher Lyt Wood said students are exposed to a lot of abstract information through media such as the Internet, and they are losing connections to what is real. They can benefit by learning to be interested in the world around them, he said.
Hoffman has an extensive background in education, and taught math in the D.C. Public Schools for several years. She said the farm school format fosters a system of mutual respect, in which students work with each other, teachers and farmers.
