For residents of Slate Mills in the southern end of Rappahannock County, a dial tone is nothing to take for granted.
Business owners and residents in the area are becoming exasperated with unreliable Verizon telephone service that has come to a head during the past couple weeks.
The Conyers House Inn and Stable was without phone service from May 23 to 30. Owner Sandra Cartwright-Brown estimates that she lost roughly $2,000 in revenue through lost business during the alwaysbusy Memorial Day weekend.
“In the bed and breakfast business, we have more rooms than anybody else” in the county, she said. “So when someone fills up, we get referrals - but not if you don’t have a phone.”
Cartwright-Brown said Verizon’s answering service has not been reliable either. She is finding messages from calls where the phone never rang.
