I’ve recently started reading Barbara Kingsolver’s book “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" about a year of eating only locally grown food. Early in the book the author says that this country could save over 1.1 million barrels of oil a week if every citizen ate, once a week, a meal composed entirely of locally grown and/or organic foods.
Living in Rappahannock County, that shouldn’t be a problem for any of us! And my search for those local food sources took me to a farm just off South Poes Road here in Amissville.
Gene Adams might be the busiest man in Amissville. I know him for his work as the owner of - Adams Custom Slaughter and purveyor of fresh meats. But he’s also got an excavating and construction business. And then, of course, there’s the farming.
Fortunately, this local operation is a family business. In fact, Gene’s uncle, Walter Adams, got the family started in the meat business in Marshall back in 1975. And one way or another, the family’s been involved ever since. These days, Walter is helping Gene in the meat business. And Gene’s wife, Kim can often be found on a Saturday selling meat in their retail operation.
