Old Rag parking
Park officials are formulating a plan for a permanent parking solution at Old Rag, and they are asking for public input to help them come up with the best solution.
Beck-Herzog said park officials have secured a new lease on the parking lot located 0.8 miles from the base of the popular Ridge Trail that leads to Old Rag's summit. Hie park has been leasing the privately owned lot since the 1970s and the new deal will carry through to 2017.
In the meantime, the park needs to figure out what to do with a 25-acre lot less than a half-mile past the existing parking area. The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club has purchased the land to be used for Old Rag parking.
Beck-Herzog said park officials are going to perform an environmental assessment of the site to ensure that a new parking area does not adversely affect the nearby Hughes River.
If the new parking lot is built, a trail would be constructed to connect the area with the Ridge Trail, so hikers do not have to walk along the road, she added.
