When my father would go away for his two-week stints at the Naval Reserve he would always bring me back something. When I was very young, he came back with a red, white and blue plastic replica of a ship. I truly believe that he would have delighted in having a son. I loved this boat though and it was complete with turrets, ash cans and torpedoes. He was a Navy man. One summer, he came back with a very special gift - a silver watch with tiny, tiny little diamonds. I cherished that. And on another trip to New Orleans, he brought back a little ornate box with medieval figures engraved on the outside. It was for putting special things in. I still have it.

When I was in the fourth grade, we had a very heavy snow. I had a thick row of black bangs and wore this tight knit cap that my mother had gotten for me.
