“Lowell is very committed to her music and works diligently to learn every instrument in which she becomes interested,” her string ensemble teacher shared. Lowell plays violin, bass, guitar and a little bit of piano. When Lowell wanted to learn to play the violin, she bought an electric blue violin from eBay for 99 cents plus $39.99 for shipping and handling. She learned basic bowing and fingering techniques from a friend. She then used money she earned from working a summer job to pay for lessons and enrolled in the strings class at Highland the next fall. Lowell’s grasp of music theory is so solid that her teacher had her instruct the class on test review day. “She determined her interest, researched her options, and dove in," said Renee Norden, director of college counseling at Highland. “This is the kind of student Lowell is.” Her teachers describe her as self-confident, enthusiastic and self-determined. “I have found her to be an intelligent, driven, positive young woman with much to offer her community,” Norden added. “Her optimism.
