Bolen family gets together
Members of the Bolen family, one of Rappahannock’s oldest families, gathered on June 9 for their semi-annual picnic and cleanup day at the Bolen family cemetery in Shenandoah National Park. The Bolen family of Rappahannock County trace their ancestry to Nathaniel Bolen who was bom in 1779 and died in 1870. He was married to Nancy Scroggins (1780-1862) and to this union were bom Lydia Ann, Edward, John Turner, Robert and Daniel Bolen. Edward Boien (1809-1876) was twice married, first to Mary Bowen (1812-1865), by whom he had fourteen children. The second wife was Lutetia Lillard with three more children bom. John Henry Bolen (1831-1910) eldest son of Edward and Mary, was former owner of the property upon which the cemetery is located. He and his wife, Mary Cornwell are buried here and several of their children. Their son, Bernard Bolen, owned the property, nearly 1,000 acres at the time of the creation of Shenandoah National Park. Three of Bernard Bolen’s children are still living and were at Saturday’s affair.
