Motor vehicle crashes on Virginia highways resulted in $8 fewer fatalities in 1978 than in 1977, including 22 fewer pedestrian deaths.
Preliminary statistics released by the Department of State Police indicate that 1077 fatalities have been recorded through December 31 as compared to 1145 in 1977. The 1978 total will likely rise when figures become complete.
A contributing factor to the 1978 reduction could include a possible carry-over effect during January and February from Governor Godwin’s Highway Crash Alert in late 1977. The Department recorded 60 highway deaths in January of 1978 and 1977, representing the lowest tallies for that month since 1964. In February of 1978, only 40 deaths were recorded and this was the lowest February figure since 1961.
