I take strong exception to last week’s letter to the editor, that recognizing the existence of China, a country of nearly a billion people, is detrimental to the best interests of the United States. Those kind of red-scare stories, reminiscent of the McCarthy era, should not continue to damage world peace and U.S. national interests as they have in the past.
Number one fallacy is the notion that Chiang Kaishek’s Nationalist forces alone fought off 3 or 4 million Japanese troops that could have been used in the Pacific against us. While Chiang’s troops did indeed engage the Japanese forces at times, he was more interested in annihilating the Chinese Communists, while the Japanese were repeatedly appeased to the detriment of
