As for the notion that the 17 million people on Taiwan are “freedom-loving”, it is hard to tell since they have had only two rulers in the past thirty years. They are, of course, Chiang and his handpicked successor—hi? son, who still rules toifay.
No doubt, when the' Communists came to power, many were dealt with quite harshly. But much of the killings were to eradicate Chiang's long-ingrained system of black markets, political payoffs, and favoritism. The corruption was on a scale, the likes of which the world has never seen. The bottom line of this corrupt rule was starvation for millions, and terrible living conditions for those that survived. Since Chiang’s departure from the mainland, the population has nearly doubled. But the redistribution of wealth, not a “green revolution” has resulted in the feeding of all of it’s citizens.
