Employers should remember that there’s a new way to report employees’ wages for social security purposes, Bruce A. Hundley, social security manager in Culpeper, said today.
There’s also something new to read those reports—a machine called an optical scanner that translates the reports to the magnetic tape language that a computer can understand.
Hundley said the Social Security Administration is concerned because some early reports are being received in a format the optical scanner can’t read—and that means more expensive manual processing.
Beginning with 1978 wages, employers are to use Form W-2 (Wage and Tax Statement) to report their workers’ earnings, Hundley said. Form W-2 has been revised for 1978 so that it can be read by the scanner.
