The Rappahannock pointto-point races will be held this Saturday over the beautiful, rolling course at J. W. Fletcher’s Thornton Hill Farm 2 miles south of Sperryville on Route 522. Beginning at 11:00 a.m., the 10-race card offers a full day of exciting steeplechase racing.
Events start with the “pair races,” which this year include races for fast time and for optimum time. The last event is the famous Hound Race which draws 50-100 of Virginia’s top foxhounds in a spirited drag race. This event, always a favorite, has traditionally symbolized the special flavor of the Rappahannock Point-to-Points.
This year’s race will be the grand finale of the Northern Virginia point-to-point circuit. Amateur steeplechase fans will be most keenly interested in the Ben Venue race for the Seven Comers Owner-Rider Trophy. This year’s race features “Chick” Owens on High Peak against “Tennessee” Graham on Boca Bird iq an exciting, head-to-head battle for the coveted prize.
