Her Death Reported
Other injured students and the teachers were transported to the hospital at Charlottesville. Rescuers thought Elizabeth Browning and Billy Pulliam could not survive that trip so they were taken to Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton.
Elizabeth Browning Graves has no recollection of feeling pain. She does remember that Tescue volunteers made several attempts before reaching the ambulance with her. Each time they moved outside, the torrents of rain increased, forcing them inside to wait for the downpour to slaken again.
Mrs. Graves has praise for the attention she received from the doctors and nurses at the hospital. She recalls dissatisfaction with the accommodations, though. When she was wheeled to her hospital room, Elizabeth told her attendants, “I can’t stay here. The bed is hard and there’s no window in this room!”
