“What’s the reason why there are not many parents in favor of summer school this year when there was such a great outcry last year?” asked chairman Beverly Massie. (Last year, results of reading tests announced in late spring showed over half the students at the elementary school performing below grade level. This apparently sparked parent support for summer school which last year was limited to reading alone. At this year’s April school board meeting, elementary assistant principal Cheryl Ritchie announced that the percentage of students reading at or above grade level had jumped from 38 to 66.)
