In 1633 the newly arrived Pilgrims of Plymouth, Mass., were astonished one morning when they beheld “a numberous company of Flies which were like for bigness unto Wasps or Bumble-Bees.

“They came out of little holes in the ground, and did eat up the green things, and made such a constant yelling noise as made all the woods ring of them, and ready to! deaf the hearer."

Turning to their Bibles, the Pilgrims concluded these “locusts" were akin to the living clouds that chewed Egypt into devastation. Indeed, they seemed to call out “Pharoah, Phaaaa...raoh!"
