In the coming year. Bloomer continued, 100 seventh graders will enter RCHS, replacing a graduating class of 77. In addition, he said that older students in the educable mentally retarded class currently meeting at the elementary school will also attend the high school in 1979-80. Looking further down the line, Bloomer said the sixth grade group was relatively small with only three classes. “But we have five fifth grade classes so there’ll be another surge then,” he added.
“Whatever enrollment figure is used, it’s far above what the school was built for,” interjected Jennings Hobson.
Bloomer replied that he understood the school’s original capacity was 250 or 275 with a classroom expansion built in 1966 for 100 additional students.
School board chairman Beverly Massie countered that former superintendent O. A. Norton had told her the school was built for 350 with the 1966 expansion bringing capacity up to 450. “It's obvious to anyone who’s been to the cafeteria that it wasn’t built for 400 students,” commented Bob Frazier.
