This year, he said, teachers referred 66 students whom they expected could complete a reading level in summer school. In many instances, the children who were referred weren’t the same children who’s parents indicated interest in summer school, according to McDaniel. He also noted that there was a wide variation in grade level among those children who might have attended.
Jack Jenkins maintained that the interest shown through the survey form plus the 66 referrals from teachers justified offering summer school. Noting that the board was currently working for capital outlay proposals for the high school, he asked what good it was going to do to have a better facility “if we get students in the high school and they can’t read?”
