Jenkins countered that the administration had sent no information home to parents on whether their child could be expected to finish the year reading on grade level if he or she attended summer school.
Sharon Kilpatrick noted that 46 regular students and 26 Title 1 students were more than the number attending summer reading classes last year.
“That's assuming that they all attend,” McDaniel responded.
Jenkins repeated that he felt the reaction would have been greater if more information had gone home to parents.
“Most parents don’t know the importance of the reading program,” added Barbara Jenkins. “They weren’t educated when they were young and they don’t realize the education their children need.”
The board took no action to implement a locally funded summer school program.
