We had a light, which lured the deer to us, and this and only this would give a hint of where we were. Near our usual hunting site was a large hollow oak. In this, I thought, I would hide the corpse. If anyone, and this was very unlikely, found the body I would merely suggest it was a hunting accident. This would work — it had to!

That night a bright, gray moon shone in the sky. I took this full moon as a good omen. We walked to our normal sight, switched on the light and held a lookout for deer. Two hours — two whole hours — I waited for the perfect chance. Then and only then it was there. Me, standing 10 feet in front of me and looking intently toward a moving shape, was perfect prey.

I lifted my gun, aimed for his back, and fired! I tried but I couldn't. He loved me. cared for me! He used me as his servant! He gave me food and shelter! He made a fool of me at parties! Oh! I couldn’t! My finger wouldn’t, couldn't fire the bullet. I lowered the gun. A mosquito bit my finger. it cramped tightly together. the gun fired. Oh! Brother, don't die, I didn’t
