Fauquier, which is normally regarded as a “swing” area, Miller had a slight edge, writh the “undecided” block being even larger than in Rappahannock.
In the final analysis, the election w ill probably be decided west of the Blue Ridge, where both candidates are better known and sixty percent of the district’s population resides. The candidate spending the most money on direct mail and radio advertising in the eastern end of the district will, in the absence of any trend for either candidate, run the best race here.
The only issue in the election appears to be Miller’s alleged desire to go on to bigger and better things. Schlabach, noting Miller’s interest in higher office, has adopted the slogan that he (Schlabach) “only wants to be a State Senator.”
Both candidates fall into the “moderate-conservative” area of the political spectrum.
All in all, it looks like the GOP, given its superior financial resources, the valley’s traditional Republicanism and Kevin Miller’s better name recognition west of the mountains, will hold on to this seat. An upset by Schlabach cannot, however, be ruled out.
