The News could have verified these simple facts with a single phone call to Evans or to me, or by turning around and asking me at the forum, where the News editor happened to be sitting directly in front of me.
Evidently the News preferred not to risk losing this “reported”—and false—fact of Evans’ prior employment by me by checking facts. The News appears to believe that a tough question put to a candidate at a public forum cannot stand alone, followed by the candidate’s own answer. It appears to see its responsibility as one of “balancing” the tough question, not by reporting just the candidate’s presumably capable answer or any follow-up questions by his supporters, but by foscusing attention on the questioner, whose possible bias it sees as devaluing the credibility of his question.
Nothing could be more manipulative. It violates everything I was ever taught as a journalist about reporting. Evans’ question was valid whether he was my son or a total stranger to me.
