family to do so. Judge Raynor Snead remarked that when he w as elected judge of the circuit court two local lawyers wanted his job, both good friends. Moffett was one of them and he came to the judge and said, "You’ve just been an interloper in this office—its been in the family for generations."
James W. Fletcher had another story, recorded in the transcript of the service: “1 remember one of the first cases I ever had in this courtroom was a murder case and it well illustrates what 1 am about to say. 1 was young and eager and enthusiastic and was going over the jury panel with my father who bad practiced here for many years and on the panel was John Carter who was a maternal uncle of Billy and he was also the brother-in-law of Frank Moffett who was prosecuting attorney. Judge Alexander’s father was the presiding judge. Well, I was somewhat concerned when 1 saw John Carter's name on the jury panel so"in consulting with my father 1 said, “Now you know one strike I've got to use and that is to take off John Carter.”
He said, “Oh, no, never do that.” Said, "In the first place, Mr. Moffett is probably going to take him off but if he doesn’t take him off, then John Carter is going to be so fair and so honest, and so honorable, that he’s going to bend over backwards and he will tend to be in your father instead of his brother-in-law’s favor.” Well, that was the precedent that the maternal and the paternal kindred of Billy Moffett’s had and Billy certainly followed that precedent throughout his life."
Used commonly in remembering Billy were the terms compassion, warmth and caring. Besides recalling his qualities on the* bench and in the courtroom many memories of hunting, fishing and riding were shared by Billy Moffett’s dear old friends.
