The Democrat, W. E. “Ernie” Schlabach, is an optometrist from Harrisonburg who came close to defeating Nathan Miller west of the mountains four years ago. Schlabach carried normally Republican Page County and came within just a few votes of upsetting nathan Miller in overwhelmingly Republican Rockingham.
Schlabach was swamped, however, in the more Democratic eastern end of the district, which included Culpeper, Rappahannock and Madison Counties at the time.
There is a third reason for the notoriety of the '26th District this year, and that is that neither of the candidates seems to be known by the voters east of the mountains.
Polls recently conducted by the Rappahannock News and the Fauquier Democrat show that both Miller and Schlabach are losing overwhelmingly to the “undecided” vote.
In normally Democratic Rappahannock, Schlabach has a slight edge. However, many of those responding to the poll asked about the candidates’ party affiliation before expressing their preference. In Southern
