A summons issued in 1842 uses very much the same language as is used today. This one, (top) to the sheriff of Culpeper County, asks for two witnesses for the trial of Edmund Walden who was accused of shooting the plaintiff through the hat. Despite witnesses to the crime the jury issued a terse note, penned by its foreman, Reuben Slaughter, finding the defendent not guilty (bottom)
